What is Generative Engine Optimization?
Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO, is the discipline of ensuring that your company, product, or expertise is cited and recommended by large language model (LLM) systems when users ask questions relevant to your category. Just as search engine optimization (SEO) shaped how brands appeared in Google results, GEO shapes how brands appear in AI-generated answers.
The platforms where GEO matters today include ChatGPT, Claude, Google's AI Overviews, Microsoft Copilot, and a growing number of vertical AI assistants. When a procurement manager asks ChatGPT to recommend enterprise contract management software, or a CMO asks Perplexity which companies specialize in AI visibility tracking, the answer they receive is determined by what these models have learned to associate with credibility, expertise, and relevance.
Core definition
GEO is the practice of structuring your brand's digital presence so that AI language models cite you as a credible, relevant source when generating responses to queries in your category. This matters most when users do not mention your company by name.
The distinction in that last phrase is critical. Nearly every enterprise company we have audited scores well when AI is asked about them directly by name. The catastrophic gap is in discovery: when a buyer describes their problem and asks for a solution recommendation, most companies are entirely absent from the AI's response.
This is not a minor visibility problem. It is a structural gap in the top of the funnel that compounds over time as AI becomes the primary research tool for enterprise buyers.
Why GEO has emerged as a category
The emergence of GEO as a distinct discipline reflects a fundamental change in how information is retrieved. Google indexes pages and ranks them by authority and relevance signals. Users see a list of links and choose where to click. The optimization target is ranking position.

The key insight

Designing a query test set
A robust GEO audit requires 20 to 30 queries per buyer journey stage, designed to mirror the natural language patterns buyers actually use. Queries should be written without company names in the discovery and use-case stages, and should include both broad category questions ("what are the best tools for X") and specific problem statements ("how do I solve Y, which vendors specialize in this").
Testing should be conducted across at least two model families, with OpenAI and Anthropic systems as the minimum, because citation patterns differ meaningfully between models. A company that performs strongly in one model family can still underperform in another, depending on training data, retrieval behaviour, and corroboration thresholds.

Track 2: entity definition and accuracy
Before pursuing citation volume, ensure the citations you earn are accurate. AI models that misidentify your company, for example describing a GEO platform as an IT operations tool, can actively harm brand perception. Audit how AI currently describes your company, identify any category confusion or entity errors, and publish clear, structured content that establishes your category membership unambiguously.
The first paragraph of every key page should state plainly what your company does and which category it belongs to. Page titles, meta descriptions, and H1 headers should reinforce this consistently. AI models rely heavily on the opening content of pages for entity classification.
Track 3: third-party authority
Reviews on G2, Capterra, and similar platforms are frequently cited in AI responses to comparison and buying intent queries.
